Artist Statement
Under my brand, Asymmetric by Design I render one-of-a-kind jewelry from antiques, vintage, eco-friendly, and recycled materials. These recycled treasures infuse my creations with powerful stories allowing the transformation of outdated family heirlooms into wearable works of art. Each piece is unique, has a name & a story, representing a vision for a better, more inclusive, and greener world. I design collections, characterized by their bold and distinctive designs, addressing global issues such as Women’s Rights, Peace and Democracy, and Climate Change. Having traveled the world and witnessed widespread disparities and climate impacts, I live by the motto; “We have won the lottery of life, and therefore, we must lead impactful and purposeful lives.”
Biography
Tonya Dickenson’s journey with antique beads and silver began in 1978 in Egypt, where she lived as the daughter of a Canadian diplomat. Throughout her travels, Tonya witnessed firsthand the inequalities and impacts of climate change, fueling her purpose to make a difference, specifically to empower women and artisans and protect our planet. Combining her creative flair with business acumen from her extensive pharmaceutical career, Tonya founded Asymmetric by Design, a sustainable, one-of-a-kind jewelry brand headquartered in Montreal, Quebec.
